THE BALLAD OF PECKHAM RYE acts as a banner, occupying temporary sites and establishing a context for exhibiting art, initiating collaborations, and staging events.

Taking its title and concept from Muriel Spark’s 1960 novel of the same name, THE BALLAD OF PECKHAM RYE uses the text as a starting point to draw on the distinctive architecture, geological monuments, histories and communities of Peckham to create a unique context for inviting artists, writers and musicians to exhibit or produce work.

‘Like a Monkey Puzzle Tree’ is the inaugural exhibition in an ongoing series of exhibitions, projects and events that will seek to explore the relationship between locale and artistic practices, how the specific can raise universal questions and how contemporary artists reflect upon the past in order to illuminate our current moment. Artists will work across a range of media, including sculpture, performance, photography, drawing, painting, film and installation.

Artists: Miriam Austin, Luke Burton, Nicky Deeley, Alexander Page, Elizabeth Porter, Ilona Sagar
Curators: Robert Dingle
