Hey! by Laura Eldret

Event Sunday, 3.30pm

Laura Eldret, Hey!, 2014, water colour artist’s impression

Performed in the shadows of the demolished Heygate Estate Hey! is informed by the way people talk about buildings, spaces and places as if they are people with free will. Eldret has been haunted by a phrase she read about the need of Elephant and Castle to ‘turn to face the City’, an image that suggests buildings literally turning to face another direction. She imagines what they are turning their backs on: social welfare, communities, independence? Eldret is engaging with the estate as both a real site and a metaphorical one to animate ideas about place-making and people’s sense of where they live. With a specially designed set and costumes mimicking the original Heygate Estate buildings, the intention of Hey! is to create a sense of occasion, collective action, contemplation and reflection – almost a contemporary Greek tragedy, originally intended to conjure a holistic catharsis in order to create better citizens.
