Autonomous Times

AUTONOMOUS TIMES follows on Nelmarie’s previous work “Loops of Relation” (2013), which explored the human-computer relationship wherein she established a performance-based collective between herself and her robot. For the exhibition at arebyte, Nelmarie has decided to extend the body of her performance partner into an assembly line of robotic arms where ‘trust building exercises’ are performed. The work was inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s ‘schizophrenic’ response to modern industrialization in his film Modern Times (1936). Nelmarie is interested in our fluctuating sense of trust in technology and how this determines the ways we both imagine and innovate our futures in relation to labour politics. This event is organized as part of the South African Season in the UK. The SA-UK Seasons 2014 & 2015 is a partnership between the Department of Arts and Culture, South Africa and the British Council. It is also supported by Arts Council England and Foundation for Future London.
