‘Motorway Becomes Sea’ is a new site-specific billboard commission by Lucy Joyce. Located opposite Queens Road Peckham railway station, Joyce’s work adopts the language and placement of advertising to explore our shifting relationship with the natural environment. The constant sprawl of the city provides a fitting context. The rapid development of London’s suburbs throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries challenges the imagination to now consider these places as once open expanses of land, sparsely populated and commonly used for agriculture.
Lucy Joyce (b. 1978, London) completed her MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art (2013). She has gone on to be selected for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries (2014) and also the current London Open at the Whitechapel Gallery. She has just won her first public commission (an Out of the Ordinary Places Commission), for which she is currently working on and creating an ambitious new body of work.
