Taking the artists’ books exhibition burning with pleasure on show at Seen Fifteen during September as a starting point, the tour and discussion explores different aspects of the printed matters’ trend: materiality versus digital, the promotion route it represents for artists, the opportunity the format opens to explore, its audiences and the economic sustainability of the model. Within a competitive and difficult art scene, the book form has emerged as an appealing option for artists to spread their work and generate a small income. However, the amount of books produced in recent years, the production costs of these sophisticated objects and the relatively limited audience it is directed to, raises questions. The discussion will involve some of the artists exhibiting and specialists in the field. It will look at what artists find in this field for their practice and what are the perspectives on the long term.
Speakers: Publisher Lewis Chaplin (Loose Joints), Curator Federica Chiocchetti (The Photocaptionist) and artists Edward and James Newton (Highchair Editions).
