Through a series of performances situated in the former police cells at The Old Police Station, artist Sarah White will work with MA interior design student, James Watts, from the Royal College of Art to design and explore ongoing research into the body’s physical understanding of loss and grief, and its relationship with site and location. Through interventions complete with specifically designed upholstery and soft furnishings, as well as re-appropriated furniture and domestic appliances; White and Watts will propose an absurd showroom within the cell walls in-keeping with the current ‘decor’ of the cells. Within this designed environment White’s performances will reference the experience of claustrophobia and suffocation induced from being within the home for prolonged periods of time, and the distortion of domestic objects – such as sofas and cushions designed to support and comfort the body – into objects of restriction and oppression.
