In the former Co-Op Bank on Hoe Street, Walthamstow, HSCB have instigated a rebel banking operation printing £50,000 worth of their own banknotes. Working with a team of artists and local people the Bank Job crew work with traditional printmaking techniques to create banknotes in denominations 1,5,10,20,50, 100 and 1000 to be sold at face value to raise money for:

  1. The purchase and write off of £1million worth of local payday debt bought on the secondary debt markets.
  2. The 4 causes featured on the notes (primary school, youth project, homeless kitchen and foodbank) working at the frontline of a failing economic system.

October 2018 sees production underway in the bank printing bonds in a collectively owned and distributed explosion of the £1 million of local payday debt bought up through the sale of the bank notes. Witness the processes and work going in to creating our very own gilt edged bonds in the bank 4-19 October and buy via Kickstarter from October 5th onwards.

Bonds will be available in multiple denominations. The purchase of a paper bond will allow the explosion of the debt to happen. Buying up and cancelling the debt is invisible and we want to make sure this project has maximum impact in challenging public debate around debt and inequality .Money raised will pay for the bond production line, (from bank rental to materials and printmaker wages), explosion costs (explosives experts, location, van) to filming and editing costs to explode this into the wide world.

‘HSCB’ has been shortlisted by Artquest for the Workweek Prize 2018. Read more.
