A performance developed by Francesca Tamse in collaboration with Mellor & Banks, accompanying her Cypher Billboard installation, Perfection by the Lines: Fine Art Perspiration.
Working with two Mellor & Banks employees, she aims to collectively think through what it means to perform masculinity in public space. The work is a nod towards day jobs taken on by artists to subsidise their practices and passions, and interrogates the varied positioning of different forms of labour – whether centred or marginal, visible or hidden, gendered or fluid, financially remunerated, unpaid or in kind. Launching within Frieze Week – where art handlers form a core, but hidden, workforce behind placing the artist’s object within commercial art space – the work seeks to foreground a labour that is often unseen. The piece also speaks about temporality in these spaces, built from the ground up and taken down once the last customer exits.
Francesca Tamse is an artist born and raised in California and currently living in London. Her work has been featured and exhibited in Vogue Italia, 1Granary, Self Publish Be Happy, The Plantation Journal, and Dear Dave Magazine.
