Strange at the House

Strange at the House is a group show that explores the domestic and the uncanny. Six artists take over a vacant, gutted terraced house in Peckham. Using sculpture, print, collage, performance and sound they explore their relationship with this familiar but secretive place. A complex melodrama plays out between the objects and the happenings within the house. With the internal structure of the building exposed like a skeleton, the artwork questions ways in which objects within the home can contain the everyday turbulence and fragility of lived experience.

Narrative and performative works question prescribed histories of the home while abstract forms hint at a much broader language of symbolism. Objects present themselves as containers mediating histories, or as agitators, the focus of dispute and change. Sometimes simply as vehicles of benign continuum.

In this show viewers are invited to consider traces of psychological and physiological connections in the home. The artists question ways in which these generate latent images and forms that mutate and recur. These tenuous interactions offer an experience where the familiar and unfamiliar are up for debate.
